With the world in lockdown we knew we needed to create something accessible remotely.

Riot Games was launching Wild Rift, the mobile version of the world’s most popular PC game, League of Legends. But how do you turn League’s most passionate fans from mobile skeptics into Wild Rift champions? To unite fans new and old, we gave them the ultimate common enemy.

 

We turned YouTube Live into a collaborative multiplayer game experience for fans all over the world.

Execution

 

To win the hearts of the League of Legends gaming community, we created an unmatched moment in gaming history where fans could unite against a greater evil in a collaborative battle against the most legendary monster of League of Legends, Baron Nashor.

 
 

Battle of Baron used a YouTube Live chat voting system which our live-rendered Baron responded dynamically to. Anyone, anywhere, could join the biggest Baron battle in history, casting their vote to choose their attack strategy and defeat the beast.

Concept Art

The game experience stayed true to the well-known League of Legends original, but we needed to bring the game’s environment and gameplay elements into 3D.

 
 
 

Once the attacks were created, we have blended them with dynamic cutscenes for an immersive, cinematic experience.

The Battle

Baron went live on YouTube, ambushing fans with his ferocious attacks. By typing in chat, fans could trigger attacks and abilities, battling Baron cooperatively. The monster responded dynamically to their tactics, losing health or becoming more enraged. After a close fight that had players on Discord screaming, it seemed like all was lost. But then fans unlocked the ability to summon the champions from Wild Rift for aid, giving them an added boost that let them finally triumph against the beast.

 
 

And as the Baron has fallen, I earned my spot on the wall of fame as well.
